I painted this last year while staying in my childhood home. When I was a kid I used to spend hours playing w the globe. I would spin it and close my eyes and stop it with my finger. Wherever it landed became a place I would look up and learn about.
I loved maps and all the facts about the different countries and cultures and landscapes

Throwback to “evacuation thoughts” during the recent fires

I might not eat anything
If I let my modern-country-dwelling-empathy lead
I imagine those veggies I picked fresh must feel the burn too.
Coated in oil and salt and left to broil in my countertop oven.
If I hadn’t learned about relationships I’d be heartbroken and starving.
I tell myself they love to give of themselves
The plants I mean, I once heard that was a thing.
I’m not broiling the whole being right?
Just the fruits, stems and maybe roots
But what of the baby greens?
Who says they consent to such heat and sauce?
I was vegetarian for a long time
But then I grew a couple of humans in my body and admitted that my flesh needed flesh.
I know people grow humans when fed from only plants but I was lazy back then and hadn’t gardened yet.
Replacing meat with store-bought-city muffins and starchy-diet replacements, because I didn’t know how to make time to feed myself with seeds and legumes and I was always short-on-time and exhausted and bloated anyways.
What I mean is I understand both stories.
I don’t want to kill anything to nourish myself. But it seems I have to, and plants feel as alive as an elephant to me, an ant, an antelope… if I remember my child-mind.
This is a ridiculous thing to be writing and sharing actually, but I know I’m not alone in this.
Nourishment is a relationship, you grow, feed, care-for, harvest only what you need, give thanks and celebrate by enjoying. Then you make compost and you shit wisely and make sure there is water and light…. Also sometimes you need to leave things alone for a while to do their thing.
Kinda like life… from the brain compost, from the nutrient-rich shit pile, that pile of leaves you used to jump into as the uninhibited child.
We are all…. Garden food, forest food
After all.

Reworking a piece from the fires of 2021 that sent us packing for over 2 weeks and ultimately changed my outlook of life here in the valley forever.
I never shared it then because it felt too rough and dark. I painted this on top of a canvas left behind by a problematic ex land partner, someone who left nightmares in my mind about uncontrollable fire destroying this place because of their egoistic magical thinking gone rogue.
I’m reworking it with all the tools I’ve learned since then ( in painting and in life) Purging the power of the wannabe false shamans who have tried to rob me of my belonging in this place. I was naive back then.
It’s been over a decade that I’ve been contending w these leftover energies. I love this place. It’s not an easy place but I’ve stayed anyways.
